New for Fall 2022, Wilson Community College will begin offering the Associate in General Education Nursing (AGEN) two-year associate degree program. The program is an additional College Transfer program designed for students seeking a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) at one of the University of North Carolina schools. And this will provide students with two options.
First, students interested in enrolling in a community college associate degree nursing program can enroll in the AGEN program and complete the necessary pre-requisite coursework for admission. Typically, applicants must complete their general education courses, pass an entrance exam (TEAS), and obtain their Certified Nursing Assistant certification to be considered for acceptance into the nursing program. The new AGEN program will give students a structured course sequence to ensure they are on track to meet admission requirements.
And the second opportunity is for students who want to earn a bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN). Students can take their first two years of coursework at WCC and transfer into one of the university nursing programs. This is made possible through the Uniform Articulation Agreement between the University of North Carolina RN to BSN programs and the North Carolina Community College Associate Degree Nursing programs. A student who completes an Associate in Applied Science (AAS) in Nursing with a GPA of at least 2.0 and a grade of C or better in the AGEN courses, and who holds a current unrestricted license as a Registered Nurse in North Carolina, will have fulfilled the UNC institutions’ lower-division general education requirements as well as nursing program entry requirements. However, because admission is competitive, no student is guaranteed admission to any particular program; he or she must apply and be accepted into a four-year school program.
Becky Strickland, WCC Dean of Allied Health, said, “We are excited to offer the AGEN option at Wilson Community College. This option enables traditional students to earn points towards admission to a nursing program, which increases the chances of acceptance into a nursing program. Additionally, eligible high school students that qualify for the Career and College Promise Program (CCP), will have the opportunity to earn college credit for nursing general education classes through the Associate Degree Nursing Pathway.”
